Basics of Coldforming

Cold forming allows you to produce parts with superior mechanical properties at high speeds, with a minimum to no waste. This technology provides an attractive alternative to conventional production methods.

The cold forming process

  • Coiled metal wire is fed into a machine and precisely sheared to length.

  • Cut pieces (‘blanks’) are moved through sequential extrusion and upsetting stations. Here, they are pushed into progressive carbide dies at room temperature using sheer power and high speed.

  • Metal is formed into a desired shape which is retained upon die removal.

  • Multi-station cold forming machines process blanks at each station, one per stage of the part development.

  • With every stroke of the machine, a finished cold formed part is ejected from the last die.

Production of hundreds of cold formed parts per minute

We're leaving machining processes far behind when it comes to speed. Some component shapes may not lend themselves to the cold forming processes. However, our state-of-the-art cold forming machinery allows us to produce even more complex components with great accuracy. Even when secondary machining operations are applied, cold forming as the base manufacturing process often proves to be the most cost-effective solution.

Benefits of Cold Forming

  • High production rates in comparison to conventional machining

  • Increased strength due to grain structure rearrangement

  • Design versatility by using multiple progressive dies

  • Reduction of raw material consumption
